What is
it like to be deaf?
People have asked me.
Deaf? Oh, hmmm, how do i explain that?
Simply, I can't hear.
Nooo, it is much more than that.
«Lucia Rikaki’s new documentary is a must see *** for it’s look
inside the world of hearing impaired people. The unpretentious
labour of love lets this overlooked group address the world..
Interviews with deaf people, family (often also deaf) and friends
reveal the day to day struggles of the deaf. In her film. Rikaki
makes the audience reconsider what is normal. In an interview the
mother from a deaf family tells of schocking her doctor by being
relieved that her newborn was also deaf. Later a young man chukles
at people’s surprise when he and his deaf friends ride beloved
motorcycles. Particularly memorable is the «star» of the film
dynamic young Lemonia Gamalia. She and her also deaf mother
articulately express two generations fight to be heard.»

«Words
written on the air, movements that reveal meanings and ideas hands
that move with the virtuosity of a dancer and provide a bridge
between two worlds.Sign language the language of the hands has its
own power to bridge communication distances between the deaf and
the hearing.Young kids converse with their own style in a language
devised by deaf people many centuries ago.The «hearing» viewer also
had a chance in some cases to witness intensive scenes in complete
silence as deaf people are perceiving them.A young deaf actress
narrates in her own gracefull silence poems written by deaf»
…………………A world living with no
sounds
If we did not have a voice,
or tongue and we would like to show things to one another, wouldn’t
we try just as the deaf are doing, to indicate them with our hands
, our head and our entire body?
PLATO
I
started getting acquainted with the deaf world through a meeting
with two rare individuals who have devoted their lives in sign
language.
Roxanni is the president of the sign language interpreters in
Greece and a CODA Child of deaf adults. Georges a sign language
teacher an ex diplomat who abandoned his carrier as diplomat to
devote himself in teaching young kids the beauty of sign language
which he also discovered and keeps discovering....
Sign language can indeed become a communication bridge between
hearing and deaf people. Cinema can help in building this bridge
using image as the main expressive tool image which "speaks" to the
people who do not hear and creates emotions who replace the
feelings missed by the hearing loss.
Beyond spoken language signs helps us discover expressive
possibilities and qualities using our entire body.
The
expressive beauty of sign language will be juxtaposed with our
daily gestures which reassemble the origin of this language even if
our signs in the hearing world do not follow the sign language
grammar we often express ourselves using our hands and facial
expression Image will reveal how close we all are to sign language
and how easily we can perceive it and thus communicate with deaf
people.
The film will be based on strong stories with important
emotional value as told by deaf people in sign language.
The films pace and rhythm will refer to the pace of sign language a
fast expressive vivid language full of beauty and energy.
